The Math, With Real Rates
Example: Mutual Of Omaha, Man, Age 60, $10,000
Premium $56.90/month (California chart). Dies of natural causes in month 18: beneficiary receives 110% of $1,024.20 paid = $1,126.62. Dies in a car accident in month 18: $10,000. Dies of natural causes in month 30: $10,000.

Example: Gerber Life, Woman, Age 70, $10,000
Premium $75.53/month (bank draft). Dies of natural causes in month 12: premiums $906.36 + 10% = $997.00. Accident in month 12: $10,000. Any cause after month 24: $10,000.

Why The Graded Period Exists
Without health questions, the carrier cannot tell a healthy 60-year-old from one with months to live. If every policy paid in full from day one, people would buy on the way to hospice and the premiums for everyone else would have to be enormous. The graded period is the carrier's substitute for underwriting. It is also why anyone who can pass a few health questions should buy a simplified-issue policy instead — the graded period disappears and the price drops.
What Counts As "Accidental"
Each policy defines it; generally death resulting directly from an external, violent and unintentional event, independent of illness, within a set number of days. Deaths from illness, suicide in the exclusion period, drug or alcohol misuse, war and certain high-risk activities are typically excluded from the accidental definition. Read the policy's definition before you rely on it.
