Declined For Life Insurance? Here Are The Doors That Are Still Open

A decline is one carrier's answer to one application on one day. It is not a verdict. Five routes, in the order we try them.

Quick Answer

If you were declined for life insurance, you can usually still get covered: (1) apply with a different carrier — underwriting rules differ and a decline at one carrier is not a decline at all of them; (2) try a simplified-issue final expense policy, which asks fewer questions and often accepts managed conditions; (3) buy guaranteed issue, which asks no health questions at all for ages 45–85 and $2,000–$25,000 with a graded benefit; (4) use group coverage through an employer or association if available; (5) ask whether the decline was for something fixable — a lab value, a missing record — and reapply after it is resolved.

The Five Routes

1. A Different Carrier, Same QuestionEvery carrier prices the same person differently. Controlled diabetes, a past cancer, a heart event more than two years ago — one carrier declines, another offers Standard. An independent agent re-shops the application rather than re-submitting it.
2. Simplified Issue (A Few Questions)No exam, a short yes/no questionnaire, smaller amounts, full benefit from day one if approved at the level tier. The questions are narrower than full underwriting, so many declined applicants qualify.
3. Guaranteed Issue (No Questions)Ages 45–85 at Mutual of Omaha, 50–85 at Fidelity Life and Colonial Penn, 50–80 at Gerber and Corebridge; $2,000–$25,000; a two- to three-year graded benefit for natural death and full payout for accidental death at carriers that publish their rule. 4. Group CoverageEmployer group life is usually guaranteed-issue up to a set amount (IRC §79 excludes the first $50,000 of employer-paid coverage from income). Some associations and credit unions offer it too.
5. Fix And ReapplyAsk the carrier for the decline reason in writing (you are entitled to it under the Fair Credit Reporting Act when consumer reports were used). A lab value, an unresolved record, or a medication change can be addressed, and some carriers reconsider after 12 months.

What A Decline Does Not Do

It Does Not Follow You

The MIB (Medical Information Bureau) may record codes from your application, but a decline itself is not a public mark, and guaranteed issue carriers generally do not check MIB.

It Does Not Raise Other Prices

Each carrier underwrites on its own. Disclose prior declines when a question asks; it does not change the math at a carrier that would have accepted you anyway.

It Does Not Mean "Never"

Time since diagnosis, treatment and stability all move you through tiers. Many people declined at 55 are Standard at 60.

Be careful with ads that promise large amounts "for a few dollars a month" to people who were declined — they are usually accidental-death products that pay only for accidents. How to tell the three apart →
